Millennials is a generation who grew up with computers, internet and social networks. Milo Cawthorne is part of a Millennial Generation (also known as Generation Y). During the Eighties, conservative politics and Reaganomics held sway as the Berlin Wall crumbled, new computer technologies emerged and blockbuster movies and MTV reshaped pop culture. The 1980s was the decade of big hair, big phones, pastel suits, Cabbage Patch Kids, Rubik’s cubes, Yuppies, Air Jordans, shoulder pads and Pac Man. The only two negatives I can thank of are that scenes of demons being beaten to death in slow motion with adult toys may not be for everyone, and I'm not sure if the gore alone would be enough to win over non-metal fans (there’s not a lot of new 'horror' ground covered). Direction-wise, the blend of horror and comedy is absolutely perfect, and there’s a lot of horror (and wider cinema) nods through ‘classic’ camera shots and visual references. ![]() There are so many throwaway jokes that you lose track, and when the film’s not poking fun at music it’s throwing some seriously good ‘old school’ over-the-top gore onto the screen - with a body-splitting, blood-drenched aesthetic that lands somewhere between Evil Dead and Braindead. There’s jokes about everything from glam/hair metal and dubstep, through to Rick Astley and the ridiculousness of ‘extreme’ metal band names (Deathgasm spitball through other potential band names like ‘Murder Boner’, ‘Maggot Sperm’, and ‘Cannibal Unicorn’). If you even remotely like any kind of Rock or Metal music this film is an absolute must-see as it’s 90 mins of lovingly poking fun at ‘metalheads’, metal bands, and most of the sub-genres. I suspect Deathgasm will come to be regarded in the same way many of Raimi's earlier movies are regarded - a cult classic which finds a well-deserved place in many people's film collections. Great casting with good performances mean that even if you don't spot this or that reference to another movie, you will still enjoy what is when it comes right down to it, a really fun film.Īs with all comedy horror movies, expect plenty of laughs and bucketloads of over the top gore, which, as with the Evil Dead movies, is played for laughs rather than to shock or frighten the viewer. Of course, all of the clever homages in the world would be for nothing if the story, dialogue or acting sucked, fortunately for us, that's all pretty good too. Mining a similar vein, fans of rock and heavy metal will appreciate numerous nods to their favourite musical genre, although if you're not a fan of heavy metal music, don't let that put you off watching this, as it never gets in the way of the fun, and you won't have to understand too much about rock music to get the jokes. Digital as well as practical effects have been deliberately made a bit old school too, which helps to channel some classic 80s movie magic. All this will have cinefiles nodding with appreciation for some great film craft which pays warm homage to what has gone before. Any fan of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell's output will know why I'm making that connection trademark mashing up of tongue-in-cheek horror with liberal doses of slapstick comedy, alongside Raimi-esque camera moves, framing and choice of shots etc. A 1970's Holden sedan might not be quite the same as an Oldsmobile Delta 88, but it's a close enough stand in when you're on a budget.
